What are Executive Functioning & Study Skills?
IB Diploma executive functioning and study skills help students manage the demands of the programme. This includes starting tasks, managing time, studying effectively and planning larger pieces of work such as IA's and the Extended Essay.
What is Executive Functioning?
Executive functioning refers to the skills students use to manage their learning. These include working memory, task initiation, planning, time management and emotional regulation.
What are Study Skills?
Study skills are strategies students use to learn, remember and demonstrate what they know. They include active recall, spaced repetition, effective note-taking and exam strategies.
What Is The Difference Between Executive Functioning And Study Skills?
LearnFire explicitly teaches core executive functioning and study skills across two frameworks:
Executive Functioning (Management System)
-
Core Focus:
Cognitive self-regulation, emotional control, and task execution. -
Key Objective:
Managing when, how, and where learning happens. -
Common Friction Point:
Procrastination on Internal Assessments despite clear deadlines. -
IB DP Application:
Breaking down the 4,000-word Extended Essay into manageable milestones. -
Coaching Outcome:
Long-term academic independence, stress reduction, and resilience.
Study Skills: The Tactical Toolkit
-
Core Focus:
Subject-specific information processing and memory techniques. -
Key Objective:
Learning what tactics to use to study. -
Common Friction Point:
Rereading notes passively instead of using active recall. -
IB DP Application:
Formatting citations, structuring TOK essays, and creating flashcards. -
Coaching Outcome:
Higher exam scores, concise writing, and efficient revision.
"These are skills we can teach."
~ Dr Reece Wartenberg, Founding Director at LearnFire

In the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, executive functioning is operationalised through the Approaches to Learning (ATL) framework.
Our coaching translates cognitive skills into specific IB-mandated ATL categories:
-
Self-Management Skills (Organisation & Time Management): Builds task prioritisation, break down assessment criteria (IA, EE, TOK), and create study schedules to prevent deadline overload.
-
Affective Skills (Emotional Regulation & Resilience): Develop stress tolerance and mindfulness strategies to manage academic anxiety, workload pressure, and motivation over two years.
-
Reflective Skills (Metacognition & Self-Evaluation): Critically evaluate learning processes, analyse past performance, and adapt study techniques for exam retention.
Why IB Students Need Executive Functioning and Study Skills
The IB Diploma Programme consists of six subject groups and the three DP core components: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS).
Students manage different academic and longer-term work in addition to their regular subject requirements.
This includes:
-
Prepararation for exams
-
Complete Internal Assessments
-
Draft the Extended Essay
-
Fulfill TOK requirements
-
Keep up with daily subject assignments
-
Revise across multiple subjects
-
Manage long-term deadlines
-
Apply feedback
-
Change methods when an approach isn't working

“When we explicitly teach executive function and study skills, we give students practical tools to manage their learning and become more independent.”
~Dr Reece Wartenberg, Founding Director, LearnFire
The Core Executive Functioning Skills We Teach
To succeed in the IB DP Programme, students need systemised management tools. LearnFire coaches focus on:
“The important thing is to understand where the student is struggling and then work on that particular gap.”
~ Dr Reece Wartenberg, Founding Director, LearnFire
How Learnfire Teach Study Skills
LearnFire uses explicit instruction, modelling, guided practice, feedback and reflection to teach study skills.
Our 6-step methodology is straightforward:
1
Understand the Skill
We unpack what the skill actually is and why it makes a difference to their workload.
2
Model the Process
The coach demonstrates the technique step-by-step, explaining the reasoning behind each action.
3
Practise the Skill
Guided practice allows students to try the technique out with direct feedback and support.
4
Review: What Worked?
Together, we reflect on performance to help the student identify which parts of the approach proved most effective.
5
Adjust the Strategy
Where a method falls short, we adapt the approach to suit the student's personal learning style.
6
Independent Application
As confidence grows, coaching support naturally steps back so the student takes full ownership of their routines.
How Study Skills Apply to the IB Curriculum

Preparing for Exams
Plan - Retrieve - Practise - Review
We teach students how to build structured revision schedules, test their memory using practice questions under timed conditions, and pinpoint knowledge gaps early so they can focus their effort where it matters most.

Research - Organise - Write - Maintain Pace
A 4,000-word independent research paper requires structure. We guide students through organising their sources, setting up clear digital filing systems, and maintaining consistent writing progress to avoid last-minute rush.

Internal Assessments (IAs)
Understand - Plan - Draft - Act on Feedback
Whether completing a science lab, history investigation, or language oral, IA's require careful project management. We help students break complex criteria into manageable stages, hit multi-month deadlines, and apply teacher feedback effectively.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)
Question - Evaluate - Structure - Communicate
In Theory of Knowledge (TOK), students critically analyse how knowledge is constructed across two key assessments: an exhibition and a 1,600-word essay. We teach students how to structure abstract arguments, evaluate competing perspectives, and present their reasoning clearly.
"Our daughter has gained so much from her time in LearnFire’s study skills workshop. The sessions have helped her build real confidence in managing her workload, staying organised, and preparing effectively for tests. She has learned how to plan her time, study with purpose, and take responsibility for her own learning."
